Darrel Darryl Mayhew.

Oh boy, this will be good.

Here’s how I think this will pan out:

1.) He lets it slip that he killed the victim within the first week of the trial
2.) He spends the remainder of his time attempting to convince the jury that the victim deserved it, that he’s the real victim, or both

These self-representing nogs tend to do that. A lot.

Duluth News Tribune:

A Duluth man plans to represent himself at a murder trial next week.

Darrel Darryl Mayhew, 30, discharged his public defender Tuesday, telling a judge he intends to present his own case to a jury.

Authorities allege Mayhew struck 70-year-old Larry Watczak over the head with a blunt object before taking off with his cellphone, tablet computer and roughly $2 in cash during a Jan. 2 home invasion on Park Point. Although Watczak was able to briefly speak with police, he quickly slipped into a coma and died 10 days later.

Mayhew is charged with intentional second-degree murder, unintentional second-degree murder, aggravated first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison.

“Defendant must be prepared to fully try the case himself,” 6th Judicial District Judge Dale Harris wrote in a three-page order approving Mayhew’s request.
