Coming into NYC’s Columbus Circle yesterday from the southwest, it was pretty quiet. There were police barrier gates set up all around the Circle. It was not until I nearly reached the end of the Circle that the protest was finally visible.
The organizing group, Cosmopolitan Anti-Fascists, had 5000 RSVPs on their Facebook page. It was only about noon when I arrived and very few people were there. By 1:00 PM their little area was filling up; there were about 250 people. My hope that the rally would turn into something interesting disappeared.
The kind of people who RSVPed were probably too hungover, too high to remember, had no follow through or were concerned with some new genital growth/rash they’d discovered. I noticed one of those guys that sell the cheap tourist prints prominently had his “Gay St” photo displayed.
The Organizers of the rally’s sales pitch was as follows:
Trump’s policies threaten many of us in the Black, Latino, LGBTQIA+, Muslim, and other communities. These policies and type of speech has no place in this country and certainly does not have a place in the city that Trump grew his empire in – a city known as a melting pot and home for many of the same people Trump continues to wage war on.
These are pretty strong words – “wage war.”
The war comes later.
Two of these brave and valiant protesters were chomping at the bit to strike back at Trump by walking in the busy streets around the park. They were summarily maced.
The crowd was pretty weird. I don’t think too many trippy hippies would even associate with the bunch. They were mainly White, Black and Mestizo. I didn’t see any Muslims or any of the “other communites” the organizers are crying about. I know what the LGBTQ are. I couldn’t identify any (also didn’t see any IA+ people, but I have no idea what that is). There was a Black dressed like he thought he was Marty McFly, but I can’t say for certain if he was gay.
Plenty of paperboys for the Socialist Worker were also flitting around.
These people really didn’t bring it. They had some drums and chants and crap but I could tell even the Black Central Park Police Officer wasn’t amused. I would have loved to have seen some fist fights and burning bitches, but the protesters really didn’t even care about the counter-protesters.
There was one old alcoholic trying to “talk some sense” into the Pro-Trump men. He was going on about how the Mexicans are our neighbors.
Boring overall. Like everything leftist in nature is these days.
Their energy is all used up.
